Fair Trade South Africa is the national umbrella organisation for Fair Trade. The fair trade movement aims to enhance trading conditions for small scale businesses, improve labour conditions for employees and empower communities through ethical and sustainable trade. We work on behalf of all stakeholders of fair trade including producers, traders, retail, support organisations and of course consumers of fair trade products.
Worldwide, more and more consumers and businesses are concerned about the marginalisation of small-scale producers and labour conditions in developing countries. This has triggered a huge growth of the fair trade sales in mainly Europe and North America benefiting thousands of small-scale producers and workers in developing countries. South Africa produces a wide variety of fair trade products that are currently all exported.
Fair Trade South Africa believes that South African consumers should also be able to support the movement with their purchasing power, and that they should be given a chance to buy fair trade products in their own country. Fair Trade South Africa is raising awareness of fair trade amongst consumers and businesses in South Africa and developing marketing opportunities for fair trade producers and traders in this country. Soon, the full range of fair trade products from around the world will be available to the South African consumer.
