Le CCA est une institution de recherche internationale qui repose sur l’idée que l’architecture est d’intérêt public. Il a été fondé en 1979 par Phyllis Lambert comme établissement culturel avant-gardiste, dans le but de sensibiliser le public au rôle de l’architecture dans la société contemporaine et à promouvoir la recherche de haut niveau dans ce domaine. Il se consacre principalement à la recherche, à la production d’expositions, de publications et d’activités de tous genres.

Le CCA est situé sur un grand espace vert ouvert à tous. L’édifice et le jardin du CCA sont le résultat d’un projet de reconstruction urbaine conçu dans les années 1980 dans la partie ouest du centre-ville de Montréal. Il est entouré au nord par le parc Baile et au sud par le Boulevard René-Lévesque et le jardin de sculptures du CCA. Celui-ci a contribué à la restauration du tissu urbain dans un secteur défiguré par les grands travaux autoroutiers du milieu du XXe siècle.

The CCA is an international research institution based on the fundamental premise that architecture is a public concern. It was founded in 1979 by Phyllis Lambert as a new type of cultural institution, with the specific aim of increasing public awareness of the role of architecture in contemporary society and promoting scholarly research in the field. They produce research, exhibitions, publications and a range of activities.

The CCA building and garden are the result of an urban reconstruction project conceived in the 1980s in the western end of downtown Montreal. The building is surrounded to the north by Baile Park, and to the south by Boulevard René-Lévesque and the CCA sculpture garden. Which restored the urban fabric of an area deeply scarred by mid-20th-century highway engineering.
