Overview
Brooks Health System operates a green administration building.
The 47,000-square-foot building serves as the corporate headquarters and training center for Brooks’ 143-bed rehabilitation hospital, home health care agency and outpatient clinics.
The building, located at 3599 University Blvd. South in Jacksonville, is the first health care facility in Northeast Florida registered for certification Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system.
The facility features low-mercury lamps and natural lighting to make it more energy efficient, and low-flow plumbing fixtures help reduce water consumption by as much as 40 percent.
About 25 percent of the materials used in the construction of the building were recycled, including carpeting, glass, steel, ceiling panels, wood and the terrazzo floor in the lobby. Of the construction waste, more than 360 tons of material was recycled.
Gresham Smith & Partners, Architects and Interior designers, McVeigh & Mangum’s Engineers and Fickling Construction worked on the project.
The lobby features a “road to recovery” exhibit that showcases patient stories, a Brooks timeline, the story of founder Dr. J. Brooks Brown, and an anatomic display of some of the advanced technology the hospital utilizes.
“We are honored to highlight several of our patients who have made great strides in their recovery, while at the same time, making our community a healthier place to live,” said Doug Baer, president and CEO of Brooks.
