Penrhyn Castle

Overview

Penrhyn Castle was built for George Hay Dawkins-Pennant . It was designed by Thomas Hopper in 1827 as a vast Neo-Norman castle. It is now owned by the National Trust.

George Hay Dawkins Pennant was the son of Henry Dawkins II (q.v.) of Overlynch and Standover (1728-1814) and grandson of Henry Dawkins I and Elizabeth Pennant, daughter of Edward Pennant. He inherited estates in both North Wales and Jamaica from his father's cousin Richard Pennant (c. 1737-1808), first Baron Penrhyn who was the son of Elizabeth Pennant's brother John (d. 1782, in turn the son of Edward Pennant and grandson of Gifford Pennant d. 1676).

A significant part of the legacy which Richard Pennant passed on to George Hay Dawkins Pennant was the largest plantation estate in Jamaica. George devoted much of the profits of the plantations to developing the slate quarries of North Wales. He was MP for Liverpool 1767-80 and 1784-90 and spoke forcibly against the campaign to abolish the slave trade.
