The Project: Rainwater Harvesting Earthworks for a rain garden

Installation Date: December 10, 2011

Location: Private residence, S Warner Elliot Loop and E Equestrian Trail, Phoenix

Workshop Leader(s): Ryan Wood and Catlow Shipek

Number of Co-op Volunteers: 15

The homeowner wanted to capture rainwater in a mulched infiltration basin to serve as a rain garden. Co-op volunteers assisted with digging, shaping, planting and mulching the rain garden, designed to capture a surface volume of 500 gallons of rainwater.

The Benefits:

Rainwater, a free water resource that once was wasted, is now redirected into multiple beneficial uses for the homeowner.

Twenty low water native plants were planted in the rain garden. These plants will: filter air, soil and water pollutants; help infiltrate water and organic matter deep into the soil, making the soil more water absorbent; and attract native pollinators and other wildlife back into the urban setting.
