The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) plans and prepares for emergencies, educates the public about preparedness, coordinates emergency response and recovery, and collects and disseminates emergency information. In August 2007, OEM's headquarters achieved a L.E.E.D Silver certification. Some of OEM's sustainable features include a roof surfaced with light, colored material from recycled content to reduce heat island effect, columns and floors that were constructed from reused material, use of low-emitting materials in the building, including the paint, furniture, adhesives, carpet and a water recycling system that uses 33% less water than a conventional building. With such features OEM headquarters received a total of 34 points toward USBC certification.
