Carnegie-Stout Public Library
Overview
Carnegie-Stout Public Library traces its origins to a subscription library of the 1850s when Dubuque was the largest and most prosperous city in Iowa. The activities of the Young Men's Literary Association, as this founding group was called, resulted in a demand in the 1890s for a free library.
Through the generosity of library philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who agreed to endow the City with a building, and the donation of a site by former Dubuque Mayor Frank D. Stout, the free public library opened on October 20, 1902. The present library occupies the same building with an addition built in 1981.
Renovation work, which began in December of 2008, includes many energy-saving and eco-friendly features including:
* Refurbishing of the rotunda, which now looks as it did when the library opened 107 years ago, even down to the beautiful stenciling
* Renovation of the third-floor auditorium (former Dubuque City Council chamber), including the exposure of a third-floor skylight
* Uncovering of the skylight and windows in the historic second floor
* Restoration of the historic stacks and glass mezzanine in the original building
* Construction of a new reference desk below the rotunda
* New energy-efficient heating-cooling system
* Averting items from the landfill by donating them to other libraries and organizations
