Overview
The Anacostia Watershed Society is a non-governmental organization composed of volunteers that designate their time to restoring, protecting, and conserving the ecological potential and beauty of the Anacostia Watershed system. Their mission is to “clean the water, recover the shores, and restore the natural heritage” of the system and ensure that it is a clean and sustainable living space for future generations. Alongside educating the public about the ecosystem the watershed provides, they aim for the location to become a place filled with environmentally friendly Eco-tourism activities. This mainly consists of very affordable and free activities such as hiking, canoeing, bird-watching, swimming and sustainable fishing. These activities allow users to experience the natural environment and get engaged in healthy activities that do not negatively impact the environment. All people are advised to take part and/or donate from local government and stakeholders, to the youth and team leaders. Many internships, projects and community events are organized at this location to broaden their base and allow new members to partake. By preserving this watershed, they are creating a home to many organisms and providing ecological benefits to the people that use it for now and future years.
