United Network for Organ Sharing
Overview
Opened in 2002, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is a four-story, 80,000 square-foot scientific and educational facility that administers the nation’s only Organ Procurement and Transplant Network, and is part of the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park. Chief among the organization’s tasks is to collect and analyze data submitted by transplant professional members of UNOS, which is then used by the scientific community to study things such as disease progression during the waiting period, factors affecting patient waiting time, etc. UNOS also devotes a significant amount of time to educating the public about organ and tissue donation.
The organization is also home to the National Donor Memorial, a 10,000 square-foot memorial garden that recognizes America's organ and tissue donors and their families.
