The Mercat Cross
Overview
The original base of The Mercat Cross, where trading was conducted and proclamations read, still stands today. It dates from 1588 but the shaft was replaced in 1902. An important part of the town's trade was in coal, so much so that the standard measure for weighing coal was known as the Culross Chalder.
