Brooklyn Brownstone

Overview

Located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, architect Jorn Schroder converted this single-family brick brownstone into a green three-unit property, including basement. Non-toxic bio-degradable paint strippers were used throughout the house on the woodwork. All glues and adhesives used were non-toxic in addition to the use of non toxic, low odor wall paints, like Benjamin Moore/BioShield low odor and lime casein (the protein component of milk) paint. Water based stains and paints were used on the wood banister and window frames throughout the house. Several of the existing floors were replaced with bamboo and linseed linoleum. Recycled doors, carpet, and selected recycled fixtures were used throughout the house. The house is scheduled for the installation of solar PV and solar thermal panels in November.
