Vue d'ensemble
Entabeni means "on the mountain" in isiZulu, the language of the Zulu people. It refers to our home in the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg Mountains.
Entabeni Education Centre was originally established under the then SA Crane Foundation in 1992. The original mandate from the Foundation was to focus on cranes and wetlands & the reaction from schools was such that it was quickly realised that the centre required additional support. Thus the centre was brought under the care of the Wildlife & Environment Society of SA under the care & mentorship of the late Tim Wright, an environmental educator of great passion & vision.
The centre was taken over privately in 2001 by Nic & Carma Shaw who formed Entabeni Communications as the vehicle to take the project further.
We have worked hard to develop our reputation as one of the top environmental & outdoor education service providers in South Africa. We are serious about maintaining that reputation through our professional service-oriented attitude, impeccable safety protocols & risk-assessment procedures, enthusiastic & knowledgeable staff & our commitment to providing quality, meaningful, relevant and enjoyable environmental and outdoor learning experiences.
From our humble beginnings as a small education centre we have come to be active in a number of environmental networks throughout the world. We deeply value our partnerships with other like-minded organisations and individuals and will work with them to make the world a better place.
We have recently bought the farm on which Entabeni and the Hlatikulu Crane & Wetland Sanctuary are situated. Now that we have security of tenure we are developing a facilities improvement plan as part of our effort to constantly improve our service. We are also developing an environmental management plan to guide us in the handling of this important buffer to the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site.
In the last 17 years we have hosted 65 000 school children (& quite a few adults) on environmental learning programmes, leadership camps, curriculum-support courses and fun school excursions. In this time we have become field leaders in:
* environmental education
* youth tourism
* adventure-based learning
* nature interpretation
* school field trips, camps & expeditions
* Crane and wetland conservation
We believe we are part of a greater process of encouraging present and future social and environmental activists through our well thought out programmes, critical thinking courses & fun times in a beautiful place.
