Overview
No one knows how the wild Ocracoke ponies arrived, but most believe they swam from a shipwreck. Once Highway 12 was completed, the ponies needed protection from fast moving cars, and so under island resident pressure, the National Park Service built a 180 acre pasture with shelter for the ponies. Today, about 20 ponies remain. There are 2 viewing platforms with a short board walk between the two. Island volunteers provide day-to-day care for the ponies. The pony pastures are located about 7 miles north of Ocracoke Village.
