Buchan Airport Community Park is located in Englewood, just off State Road 776 adjacent to the Buchan Airport. Amenities include shaded playgrounds, picnic areas and grills, community meeting rooms, paved sidewalks for biking and walking, hammock area with walking trails, and a community garden.
Community gardens provide a place for individuals to raise vegetables, fruits and herbs, even if there is not enough space or soil nearby your home. Gardeners can improve their families’ health and nutrition while reducing food costs. Community gardens also benefit the neighborhoods where they are located by utilizing open space and promoting a sense of community pride.
The garden theme is “Gardening Together – Growing Community.” The primary goal of the garden is to unite the community while learning about growing healthy vegetables using organic principles, water conservation, and recycling. The garden, planted for the first time in October 2011, serves South Sarasota County residents. Gardeners include residents of nearby neighborhoods and children from the Terra Nichol Academy.
The Friends of Sarasota County Parks, the Englewood Community Redevelopment Agency, the Englewood Center for Sustainability, and the University of Florida/IFAS Extension, provided invaluable assistance to help establish the garden. A local drafter donated her services to design the garden layout. In 2011, Sarasota County Parks and Recreation cleared the ground and provided compost. The Englewood Community Redevelopment Agency provided funds for a shed, for the installation of recycled fencing, the donated cisterns and hand pump. The compost bins and accessible raised bed were built with recycled lumber from a Pioneer Day Parade float. Kitty litter buckets from an animal rescue are serving as hand tool storage. The Recycled Plastic Factory of Englewood donated the herb garden border. Soil amendments and additional cisterns were purchased with funds from a 2012 Sarasota County Neighborhood Grant. Half of the soil amendment purchase was donated by Naturali Pro Florida, LLC of Sarasota.
Members of the Lemon Bay Garden Club assist with garden management and grant applications. Community organizations including the Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay, The Open Studio, Earth T.A.S.K. Crew Summer Camp, Artists Acres and Terra Nichol Academy participated in an event to decorate the cisterns with original art.
