Mother Jones House
Overview
The Mother Jones House, a partnership between Wheeling Jesuit and Laughlin Memorial Chapel, is an intentional Christian service community of WJU students. Under the direction of a house mentor, Mother Jones House students work and serve in the neighboorhood of East Wheeling. Each Student devotes ten hours each week to service with Laughlin Memorial Chapel in their after-school and at the Catholic Neighborhood Center where they assist with prison ministry, visiting shut-ins, and preparing meals. Some are assigned to Catholic Elementary School, Lincoln Detention Center, Housing Connections, and Wheeling Healthright (free medical clinic).
With the students doing an average of 10 hours per week, they recieve an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,000 at the end of the year. Room and board for the house is also significantly less expensive than it is on campus. The house prays together once a week. They also host community dinners where other students from WJU, faculty, staff, and members of the East Wheeling community are invited to the house for food, fun and community building.
