Overview
35 East Garfield Avenue
Designed by architect Thomas J. Emery, the house was built in 1896 for 20 year old James B. Stout, who became a milk distributor and co-owner of Atlantic Grocery Company at First and Mount Avenues. In 1907, the house was sold to the owner of the local bakery and developer of Keansburg Amusement Park, William A. Gehlhaus, who lived in the house until 1948.
This is a fairly straight forward 2 1/2 story Victorian. The roof line in front is a regular gable, but longer and lower on one side. The wraparound porch as sawnwork balustrades and a gable over the entry. The house retains its original form and has the original windows and doors.
