For the past 17 years, Bittersweet Farm Plant-A-Row Community Garden has raised organically grown vegetables for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. Our 2008 harvest yielded 4,237 pounds of vegetables, providing nutritious food for needy people in southeastern Michigan - 70,000 in Oakland County alone. For Master Gardener Candidates, the site qualifies for mandatory hours. This year we plan to increase production. With the leadership and guidance of garden-manager Jim Tesnar, our goal for the 2009 growing season is 6,000 pounds of vegetables. With your help, we can do it. For MG's who want to increase their knowledge and skills, working with garden-manager Jim Tesnar, a horticultural professional, can be very rewarding. Regular Schedule. Master Gardeners convene at Bittersweet every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Just come by. Special/Early Schedule. Those who wish to garden other days, and/or start gardening as early as April, should call Jim at (248) 627-4434. Continuing A Tradition. On Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 25, beginning at 9:00 a.m., Master Gardeners, friends and family will plant starts and mulch the whole 20,000 sq. ft. garden (areas that haven't been seeded) in a single morning (o.k., and maybe part of the afternoon, for whoever has time). A pot luck luncheon will be served, so, if you can stay for lunch, please bring a dish to pass and table service. Management will supply hot-dogs and beverages. Also bring a trowel and/or a hoe if you have one, and wear a hat and work/gardening gloves. Come By and Dig In. If you want to continue working at the garden during the summer, you are most welcome. Or, just come by for the Big Planting homecoming and picnic. It's Easy To Get Here. Get off I-75 at Exit 91, for Clarkston/Davison (also Ortonville). Turn right onto M-15 (Ortonville Road) and go about a mile to the second light (a set of four) at Hubbard Rd. Turn left onto Hubbard and go a half mile to Allen Road. Turn right onto Allen, and we're the first drive on the left, 8551 Allen Road. After unloading, please park two drives up on the left at the cow sign. If you have any questions, call me at (248) 620-0111 after 9:00 a.m and evenings before 10:00. Hoping to see you and your gardener loved-ones, Bob McGowan and Jim Tesnar
