Overview
You will love our 11 scenic acres with nursery grounds, display gardens, woods, natural ponds, wetlands, and koi pond with waterfall--just a few minutes from Ithaca in the picturesque Finger Lakes Region. As well as growing choice landscape plants not found at other nurseries, they are proud of our local native plant propagation program, the most comprehensive retail operation of its kind in New York State.
Their plants are locally-grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. They hand weed, maintain the highest quality by moving plants at the right times from greenhouse to shadehouse to outdoors; and they hand-water to make sure plants get just what they need. The Plantsmen Nursery was founded in 1994 by Rick Hedrick and Patrick Jensen to meet demand for unusual, specialty plants. The original emphasis was on annuals and tender perennials, but a well-rounded selection of perennials was also available. A portion of the property was tamed gradually, for growing grounds and an exceptional display garden.
In March of 2006, Daniel Segal took over as the new owner of The Plantsmen. Dan has been engaged in horticulture, landscaping, nursery work and botany for the last 18 years, in California, Virginia, New Jersey and New York. He has been waiting for an opportunity to return to the Finger Lakes area in a nursery context since living here years ago. His background using native plants for environmental landscaping and restoration, plus his experience collecting and propagating thousands of species of plants, will continue to make The Plantsmen Nursery unique, and will bring a new style of horticulture to the area.
As a father with young kids, and also a plant lover, his goal is to have it all: an outstanding nursery, but one that's kid-friendly and kid-safe. They have a play area just for kids, so you can bring your children to the nursery. They have also begun to develop simple paths around the ponds and through parts of the woods so families can walk easily, with minimal disturbance.
