The Cape Hatteras Anglers Club was formed in 1957 by 81 people for the sole purpose of stimulating tourism during the fall season. The founders of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club sought to achieve this goal by hosting a surf fishing tournament. The tournament was such a success that it has been held every year.
The club's purpose is to promote and support the conservation and preservation of fish and all types of marine life and wildlife; to cooperate with all federal, state and local authorities, department and officials in carrying out the laws, rules and regulations promulgated and adopted by such agencies for the protection, conservation and propagation of all fish, marine life and wildlife; to promote, support, sponsor and carry on among its members interest in fish, marine and wildlife and a friendly and harmonious relationship among all fishermen, and to encourage and promote their participation in the protection, preservation and propagation of fish and wildlife; to sponsor, carry out, promote, conduct and supervise fishing tournaments, contests and sports events, relating to fish and wildlife, sponsored by this organization or in cooperation with any other approved organization; and to serve as a "Watch Dog" organization over all individuals and agencies that would close or limit access to our beaches.
