陶業沙鹿和大甲東是中部早期最重要的製陶瓷的地方。清末漢移民人數增加,日常生活陶器需求大,故陶業因而興起。當時本地人陳怙,聘請泉州師傅製造煙囪、硿仔等陶器,此為本鎮陶業發展的開端;1911年(明治44年)陳貞創立「金福興瓦窯工廠」,製造磚瓦和日用陶器,成為沙轆庄規模最大最重要的窯場,製造磚瓦、陶器行銷台灣各地,在台灣陶瓷業發展上有其歷史的定位。不僅是技術傳播、窯場的開創、師傅的養成,也帶動本鎮窯業的興起,並且對於台灣各地如大甲東、嘉義埤仔頭、高雄九曲堂等地的窯業有其深遠的影響。

Ceramic Industry in Shalu and Dajiadong was the most important place of making ceramics during the early period in Central Taiwan. The increase of immigrants at the End of Qing Dynasty, and the great demand in ceramics had therefore brought the prosperity of Ceramic industry.Hu Chen, a local person, hired a Quanzhou’s artisan to make chimneys in ceramics during the time. This was the beginning of ceramic industry. In 1911 (44th year of Meiji), Zhen Chen established Jinfuxing ceramic industry. He produces bricks, tiles and necessities of ceramics and sold around the world. For the development of Taiwan’s ceramic industry, it plays an important role in the history. It’s not only the dissemination of technology, creation of kiln and cultivation of artisan, but also brought the prosperity of ceramic industry around Taiwan. It also has the deep influence on kiln industry, such as Dajiadong, Pizaitou in Chiayi and Jiuqutang in Kaohsiung.
