Overview
Added Value Farm
Added Value is a lively farm that promotes the sustainable development of South Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood by nurturing a new generation of young leaders. A nonprofit, Added Value works towards this goal by creating opportunities to expand knowledge, develop new skills and positively engage with their community. First established when the only grocery store in Red Hook was closing, forcing residents to look outside the neighborhood for healthy food, Added Value transformed a 2.75 acre dilapidated playground into a socially responsible urban farming enterprise. A leader in the food justice movement, it provides fresh produce, encourages healthy eating, resiliency and food self-dependence, with its CSA, harvest festivals and other community events. Added Value has help transform Red Hook from its violent past but the community was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
