Casa Tuquesa
Overview
History of this business:
Owner Maria Teresa Etrusco, a Sao Paulo native, after living in France opened her doors on May 1, 2008 after 2 years of planning and design, and 5 years to create a new concept of pousada in historical Paraty, the boutique pousada. Casa Turquesa is a cut above the rest, and unique to Paraty. Designed by Renato Tavolaroo, while keeping with the historical tradition of the town, Casa Turquesa has been converted to a 9 spacious and contemporary room guest house with beautiful design touches, terrific attention to detail and immaculate workmanship. Upon check-in guests are given personal sandals as part of the transformation experience to be worn around the hotel. Each suite has a unique color theme, noted by the tassel on the door and the accents of the room. All suites have high ceilings, large beds, quality furnishings, and large state of the art bathrooms. Every detail has been very well thought out by Maria through her experience of other hotels. Casa Turquesa features amenities that she feels are omitted in other hotels, such as full length mirrors, good reading lights on adjustable stands, and Egyptian cotton bed linens. Additionally, the staff at Casa Turquesa makes you feel like family; If you wake up at 2 pm and want breakfast, its there. All meals are cooked on premise using the freshest local ingredients. The communal reading space, equipped with a fireplace for cool evenings, gives a feel of home, and a luxurious plunge pool as a centerpiece in a walled garden adorned by native plants displays Brazil’s natural beauty. At check-out each guest is given a personal parting gift as a remembrance of their stay.
Sustainable Features of this business:
An equal amount of attention to the environment was considered as the attention to guests in the design of Casa Turquesa. The layout of the property capitalizes on the natural sunlight and cross ventilation of Paraty. Additionally, the pousada was constructed using local woods and keeping in tradition with the local colonial history. As far as energy usage, Casa Turquesa utilizes energy efficient lights and fans, and individual A/C units and water heaters. The pousada also installed an eco friendly waste management system. In the kitchen products for breakfast and tea are grown locally, and in the office all employees are locals, many of whom speak Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Also, the art through out the hotel is the art of Francisco, a manager. In all, a stay at Casa Turquesa proves that environmental sustainability does not compromise luxury or comfort. This pousada hires local people and was elected ‘Pousada of 2008’ by Guia Quatro Rodas, Brazil’s most respected hotel guide.
