Bee Ridge Community Garden
![Community Garden: Often planted on public or formerly abandoned land, community gardens are run by volunteers who cultivate vegetables or flowers and closer relationships to nature and one another. Generally open to all participants, they are sometimes fenced, locked or threatened by development. May offer hands-on learning and a habitat for birds and insects. Overview
Community gardens provide a place for individuals to raise vegetables, fruits and herbs, even if there is not enough space or soil nearby your home. Gardeners can improve their families’ health and nutrition while reducing food costs. Community gardens also benefit the neighborhoods where they are located by utilizing open space and promoting a sense of community pride.
Sarasota’s newest community garden celebrated its Grand Opening in October 2013. The garden serves the needs of the working community in the Bee Ridge neighborhood vicinity. This garden features 24 plots, lovely raised beds and a paver pathway, installed through the hard work of local volunteers. Most start-up costs were provided through a Sarasota County Neighborhood Grant.
For information about obtaining a plot, contact Stacy Spriggs, Community and School Gardens Coordinator, 941-861-9815 or sspriggs@scgov.net.
