Scherer Thaxton Preserve
Overview
With 287 acres of habitats that include: pine flatwoods, depressional wetlands, and mesic hammocks, Scherer Thaxton Preserve is the newest parcel with a grand opening in spring of 2014.
The property was first acquired in 1992 to continue the natural landscape and wildlife corridor adjacent to Mary Thaxton Memorial Preserve of the Oscar Scherer State Park. Elsa Scherer Burrows left her family's ranch to the state in memory of her father, Oscar Scherer.
Former Sarasota County Commissioner Jon Thaxton, a local Florida scrub-jay expert, led the effort to protect additional lands adjacent to the park. While you hike, keep an eye out swallow-tail kites or a soaring eagle. A diverse variety of Florida native flowering plants with seasonal explosions of color awaits you.
Look for the interpretive exhibit with ample parking.
There are benches available with views of the lake.
Recreational activities include: biking, birding, fishing, hiking, paddling and wildlife viewing.
Marked looped fitness trail around the lake.
Unpaved hiking trails are available for your use (possible seasonal trail flooding occurs).
