On our trip to Athens, I was fortunate enough to visit the Qbox Gallery, a curatorial dealership located in the Art Tower of the Central Food Market. This contemporary gallery grants residencies to international artists, and recently housed Megan and Murray McMillan.
Megan and Murray are video, photography, and installation artists who work as a collaborative pair. Their most recent installation, titled "What We Loved and Forgot" is made entirely of recycled materials. The plastic that they used was donated to them by a widow who acquired it from late husband’s industrial business. The widow’s only request was that the couple do something beautiful with this plastic.
First, Megan and Murray created large lily structures out of the plastic. These enormous yellow lilies were photographed in their studio in Providence, Rhode Island. The couple considered these sculptures to be the first phase of their project, and decided to dismantle these lilies and build them again at Qbox.
The Qbox lilies took on a more abstract form from their predecessors, and the plastic was heat-shrunk to create a different effect. The McMillans create work that is temporary and timeless at the same time. Fans of recycled art will definitely enjoy this exhibit.
