The Dawn Palace was conceived by Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 as the official residence of the President of Brazil and was the first definitive building constructed in the new city, taking seven months to be completed. This masterpiece stands out for its elegance and lightness, details and proportions, despite its simple lines. The design of the Palace represented a shift from the then international excessive aesthetic trend to a more architectural concern. The composition made of the rectangular body and the lateral small chapel evokes farmhouses from the colonial period. So does the external white marble supporting columns, barely touching the ground, remitting to the hammocks hanging outside at the patios of colonial houses. The shape of the pillars have become one of the symbols of the capital, even printed on the official seal of the Fedral District, and known worldwide. The area of the Palace includes gardens, swimming pool, the main building and wings, totalling seven thousand square meters. The landscape was signed by Roberto Burle Marx. The chapel's facade was designed by Athos Bulcao. The Palace is decorated with works of art and sculptures. Its facade is reflected in the reflecting pool, creating an infinite virtual image. From 2004 to 2006, the Palace underwent structural renovations. The Palace keeps a tour program for public and private elementary schools in Brasilia, wchihc include civic orientation, transportantion and snacks for a group of forty students.
The Palace is also open to the public. Visits are guided only and on a first-come-first serve basis. Tours inlcude information booklet, an institutional video, followed by a narrated tour about the architecture and history of the Palace.
Hours: Wed: 3pm to 5:30pm. Distribution of numbers start at 2:30 pm.
