Founded in 1918 at the old Irving Place Theater, Maurice Schwartz's theater offered plays by living European writers such as George Bernard Shaw and Artur Schnitzler, by classical playwrights such as Molière, and by almost all the Yiddish playwrights of merit. Legend has it that Walter Matthau began his film career here as a young boy working at the concession counter.

Initially, the theaters were grouped on Grand St. They moved up to Second Avenue between Houston and 14th St.

The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation has been watching the landmarked Yiddish Art Theatre ever since owners bolted netting to the deteriorating cast-concrete façade in 2007. For more information, visit http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/yiddish_art_theater/yatheater-l...
