This building (called the Marble Palace) housed America's first department store. It was founded by Alexander Turney Stewart who had emigrated from County Antrim in 1818 as a boy of fifteen. The store conteined two acres of floor space and, at its height, employeed three hundred salesmen and clerks. Although the average Irish immigrant could hardly afford to buy from him, Stewart remained sufficiently loyal to his countrymen to send a shiploiad of provisions back to Ireland during the Famine. He was not alone in his charity. It's estimated that gifts of money, food, and clothing from America totaled one million dollars, a sum that did not include what was sent to the victims privately.

This structure later contained the printing plant for the New York Sun until it ceased production on September 30, 2008.
