World War II Navy Base Cistern
Overview
Before 1977, most homes in Ocracoke had cisterns which were used to collect rainwater. This water was used for drinking and cooking - the water was too precious to be used for other purposes. The US Navy had their own cistern to supply water to the base during World War II.
