Coed-y-Felin

Coed-y-Felin comprises about 16 acres of semi-ancient and mixed natural woodland and is designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI); that is ‘one of the most important sites of nature conservation value at the local level’. It is also a valuable section of the Nant Fawr corridor that is recognised by the County Council as having strategic importance in terms of recreation, amenity and wildlife.

It was because of this importance that the Friends of Coed-y-Felin was formed. We are a group of volunteers, mainly of neighbours from around the wood, and whose objectives are:-

To improve this valuable amenity and to help to conserve it for the community.
To promote the study of the wildlife in the woods, the plants, birds, animals and insects in their natural habitat.
To preserve and encourage the flora and fauna of the woodlands, including its diversity of trees.
To work in partnership with the Cardiff City Council, with all local residents and with any other appropriate body.
To promote the educational enjoyment of Coed-y-Felin.

We have achieved a great deal since our formation in 1999; recent projects being the construction of the woodland path leading from Clos Llysfaen down to the Nant Fawr and the stepping stones and setting out a Nature Trail. You can keep up to date with our activities in the Lisvane Link.

So how can I get involved?

Membership: There is no formal membership. All we ask is a contribution of £5.00 per household every year or so.
Working parties: The one thing we are always in desperate need of is help on the working parties. These are usually held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, starting at 2.00pm, meeting at the Heol Cefn Onn entrance. Here we carry out woodland maintenance and contribute to ongoing projects. Notices of these are posted at the entrances to the wood and published in the Lisvane Link. All are welcome to join in as there is work for every ability, family involvement is especially welcome. A qualified Park Ranger supervises all working parties and all equipment is provided. Suitable outdoor clothing should be worn.
Others: If you feel that you could contribute in other ways, please let us know.

If you are interested in joining us or wish to make a contribution, please contact Cardiff Ranger Services (029 2044 5900 and ask for Ranger Services) or look in the Lisvane Link for contact details.
