Lillian Wald was a nurse and settlement worker that advocated for the creation of Seward Park, the first municipal playground of its kind built in the United States over one hundred years ago. The park, located north of East Broadway and east of Essex Street was built to promote organized games in public playgrounds as an alternative to playing in dangerously crowded city streets at the turn of the 19th century. During Lillian Wald’s time, there were not many public spaces and playgrounds where Lower East Side children could play. Seward Park became a safe haven for children to play and be kids. Seward Park was also used to school recently arrived immigrant children on how to become American. The park is now enjoyed by Lower East Side residents of different cultural backgrounds and ages. During the summer months the park is quiet with lots of natural shade, making it the perfect place to sit, read a good book and have lunch.
