History:

The Washington Township Library rain garden was installed to serve as a demonstration rain garden to educate homeowners, business owners and government facilities on how rain gardens can minimize impacts to nearby waterways.

Type of Runoff Managed:

This rain garden manages stormwater from the Washington Township Library's rooftop, before the runoff is sent into a near by catch basin. The downspouts were adjusted to route water directly into the rain garden.

Installation:

Approximately ten Raritan Highlands Compact members were present for the installation of the rain garden in Fall 2007. Funding for this project was provided by Pfizer, the Leavens Foundation, New Jersey Corporate Wetland Resoration Partnership, Morris County Utilities Authority, and the Garden Club of Long Valley. Aditional in-kind support was provided by staff from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program and Master Gardeners of Morris County. Two rain gardens were placed in series and into an existing swale that conveyed runoff from the side of the building and into a storm sewer catch basin. The rain gardens receive stormwater from two downspouts from the library rooftop. Any overflow from the downslope rain garden will be discharged into the existing infrastructure of the storm sewer.

Plant List:

Big Bluestem
Blue Lobelia
Iris
Soft Rush
Steepleberry
Winterberry Holly

Maintenance:

The rain garden is maintained by the Raritan Highlands Compact and volunteers from the Garden Club of Long Valley.
