Gloucester Salt Pond

Overview

Area where salt was producing during the Revolutionary War. 1800 was the reference to the salt mine. As water would come in, boards would be put around an area along the shore to block the water. As the water evaporated, the salt would be swept up. The bottom of the salt mine was probably made of wood boards as well. Bricks were used to hold the boards in place. The boards were called "the bars."
