개요
The education department at the Museum of the Earth at PRI aims to make the history of Earth and its life—and the science by which we understand it—accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. To reach this goal they offer a wide variety of programs, lectures, and field trips to public and private audiences. Special emphasis is put on Climate Change, Evolution and the Marcellus Shale Natural Gas extraction project.
Programs and exhibit hall tours are an ideal way to enrich classes’ field trip experience. At the Museum of the Earth, hands-on educational programs emphasize science as a process of inquiry and exploration.
A basic understanding of the history of the Earth and its life, and the science by which we study it, plays a vital role in shaping an informed public ready to tackle the next set of global challenges. These Earth science basics - what we call Earth 101 - are at the core of their educational outreach mission and many of PRI's educational programming and exhibits.
A day spent at the Museum of the Earth can be insightful and rewarding:
- Journey 540 million years back in time with the extraordinary 500 foot mural, Rock of Ages Sands of Time, depicting fossils from the dawn of macroscopic life to the present.
- Discover the origins of our planet and its life through four state-of-the-art Audio-Visual Theatre Presentations.
-Experience what life was like in three ancient worlds of New York State: Beneath and Ancient Sea, Where Dinosaurs Walked, and A World Carved by Ice.
-Marvel at the skeleton of the Hyde Park Mastodon, one of the most complete skeletons ever found.
-Touch and feel history through hands-on exploration of fossils at the Discovery Stations - Fossil Lab and Dino Lab!
- Study the life and death of Right Whale #2030, an endangered whale species, as the actual 44-foot skeleton floats above.
-Witness specimens being prepared for research in the Fossil Preparation Lab.
-Delve further into the Earth and Earth System Change through rotating exhibitions, public programs, field trips, events, lectures, and publications.
The Museum of the Earth is powered in part by geothermal and wind energy.
