개요
The Kimal Lumber Drive-Thru in Sarasota is the third location to become a certified GBP (Kimal Lumberyard in Nokomis and Event Center in Venice). Kimal Lumber & Hardware Company is one of the few independent lumber dealers still in business in Southwest Florida. Kimal Lumber opened in 1981 during a recession year and has grown steadily from its inception into 5 separate locations, including an Exterior Window and Door Division, an Interior Door and Pocket Frame Division at the original Lumberyard, an Engineered Wood/Truss Division, and a second Lumberyard and hardware store in Englewood, Florida. They are continually changing to meet the challenging “New World” after the downturn and the end of the housing boom. Kimal is driven by our customer’s needs and always strive to discover new products, systems and technologies that will move us into the future—because the future is really where it’s at.
As a Green Business Partner, Kimal Lumber is going above and beyond to make a positive impact in our community. The newly opened Kimal Drive-Thru on Fruitville Road was built with the environmental focus in mind. From an energy savings perspective the 38,600 sq. ft facility was designed to use natural sunlight to amplify it throughout the showroom. By installing DayStar Skylight systems, they are able to save on energy costs and emissions. In addition to natural skylights, Kimal installed high efficiency T-6 ballast lights, automatically controlled lighting sensors and thermostats controls for the HVAC system.
The Kimal Drive-Thru utilized the concept of conservation and sustainability as part of their design function. The floors are made from polished concrete that will virtually last forever, the counters of the pro-desk and customer check-out are made out of old bowling lanes and scrap wood, and the showroom meeting room is designed using recycled scrap materials. In the loading area, Kimal uses propane powered forklifts and a power bin loading rack system to reduce impacts, as well as improve employee safety. Kimal installed low-flow toilets, faucet aerators, automatic shut off timers and tank-less urinals to conserve water. The staff at Kimal is dedicated to recycling. They save coffee grounds to be used as composting material, collect aluminum cans for a donut fund, recycle cardboard material, and even design wall art, chairs, and desk from recycled wood.
Kimal not only operates in an environmentally responsible manner, but sells products that are sustainable, too. They sell tube skylight systems, engineered plastic chairs and tables and numerous types of engineered lumber. They have an area in the showroom focused on green cleaning products and provide cut wood scraps of all sizes for woodworking craftsmen. Additionally, they proudly sell Made in the USA products, including Maze Nails – the only nails made in USA.
CEO Al Bavry shared a story with us on how their environmental commitment got started. He explained that 26 yrs ago at the Englewood location, they noticed that due to rising costs they no longer could offer overtime on weekends to come and clean up the facility. They needed to clean as they go and manage the yard more effectively. Starting with one trash bin for scrap materials, it spread to several bins, and ultimately throughout the entire organization.
Kimal Lumber Drive Thru became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2014. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County.
