Old Union Stone Church and Burial Ground
Overview
Constructed in 1774 on land owned by Philip Weis, the Old Stone Union Church replaced an earlier log structure. Built as a "union" church, it served the needs of both the Lutheran and the Dutch Reformed congregations. In 1813, the Dutch Reformed congregation became associated with the New Brunswick Presbytery of the the Presbyterian Church. Both churches, Zion Lutheran and the Long Valley Presbyterian, continue to own the property.
The oldest legible graves date to 1766. Buried on the site is first settler, William Welsh. The burial ground contains the second largest assemblage in NJ of markers carved by noted master stonecarver, John Solomon Teetzel.
The site contains a Morris County Heritage Commission Historical Marker to Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, Father of the Lutheran Church in America.
