Overview
Although it is now a protected wildlife habitat, Skomer Island has a history of human settlement that can be traced to the end of the Bronze Age. It is an example of how the adoption of a consumer economy has eroded former 'islands of sustainability', large and small.
The chequered history of Skomer and the adjacent island of Skokholm over the past century is told in the writings of Ronald Lockley and Roscoe Howells
