Overview
60 Ocean Boulevard
Curtis Cottage
Built by 1889 by the Rev. Dr. Curtis. Behind a white picket fence, this 2 1/2 story house has gray shingles. Its gabled roof has a carved and bracketed gable ornament, and is surmounted by an octagonal cupola with four windows.
Note that the houses of 58 and 60 Ocean Boulevard were known as "Ministers' Row" in the 1880s.
People: This land was one of several bayside properties owned in 1889 by a Methodist pastor, the Rev. Dr. Edward C. Curtis, who was also a town booster. Until 1894, Curtis was president of the Methodist-run Atlantic Highlands Association which first promoted the area as a religious camp-meeting ground and bought extensive lands for the purpose. In 884, he founded the monthly newspaper, Atlantic Highlands Register.
