Overview
170 Ocean Boulevard
Above bayside cliffs off Ocean Boulevard is a platform of land known in the old days as Point Lookout. Its high setting affords an expansive view out over the bay towards the New York skyline and Sandy Hook. This was a favorite destination for vacationers in the late 1800s because Ocean Boulevard (Bay View was its name then) ended here.
At the sidewalk lookout, in the fall of 1920, a huge piece of this cliff fell to the shore with a loud noise, burying the railroad tracks below for days. The road was rebuilt on pilings and became known as "Landslide Bridge." The present bridge is from 1968. The soil on the cliff is slippery due to deposits of marl, which in turn is rich in very old fossils.
