The mission of the YMCA is to promote Judeo-Christian principles through programs that build a healthy mind, body and spirit for all. The core values of the organization are caring, honesty, respect and responsibity. The nonprofit organization – in partnership with others – serves as an intergenerational community hub with programs, services and resources available to all persons, regardless of status or ability to pay, that will enable them to improve their quality of life.

The Venice YMCA was recently named a partner of the Sarasota County’s Green Business Partnership. To become a partner of the program, the Y was evaluated on several key areas, including recycling, water and energy conservation, solid waste disposal and overall environment standards. In addition to meeting the partnership standards, the Y also has an environmentally-friendly geo-thermal pool system that cools and heats the Olympic sized pool. Also, in the last year the Y renovated its 25-year-old gymnasium’s roof and cooling system to improve energy efficiency.

"It’s our responsibility to take care of the Y at the highest standards," said Pat Ryan, Chief Operating Officer of the Venice Y. "Going through the evaluation process to become a Green Business Partner showed us how seemingly small actions – like setting the TVs on the cardio equipment to power down when earphones aren’t being used – can make big differences."

The South County Family YMCA became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2013. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County.
