Refuge, established May 17, 1937, runs for the 13 miles at north end of Hatteras Island and offers spectacular views of Pamlico Sound and Atlantic Ocean and true feeling of an Outer Banks barrier island. The refuge is a birder’s paradise with a bird list of 365 species, including migratory neotropicals, wading birds, raptors, and wintering ducks, geese and swans. The Pea Island refuge is in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service national wildlife refuge system and administered under Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.
A great place to bird watch with guided tours with local birders.
