Added Value: The Farm at Governor's Island
Overview
Partnering with the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation, Added Value has launched a three acre farm just across the water from their Red Hook farm. The farm will add more educational opportunities for South Brooklyn’s youth. Eventually it will help bring the Island together as a community, with each person able to contribute to the Island’s sustainable development, whether resident, employee, student, vendor, or visitor, creating a proud legacy for the greater community to which Governors Island belongs.
Added Value has grown over 12 tons of fresh produce for donation, sale and consumption — with the food flowing through their farmers market, the guaranteed shares in the harvest they offer for payment or work on the farm (known as a CSA), the local restaurants who've partnered with them to expand the availability of fresh responsibly grown local food, and local food pantries for the needy. The farm serves as a daily educational/work site for more the 152 teens through our youth programs, creating opportunities for the youth of South Brooklyn to expand their knowledge base, develop new skills and positively engage with their community through the operation of a socially responsible urban farming enterprise.
