History of this Location
In 1703, the Forte Defensor was built to protect the city's important commercial warehouses. Six cannons were installed. A subsequent economic decline of the region left the fort in ruins until 1822. When it was reconstructed, it was dedicated to Emperor Dom Pedro I. The area around the fort is referred to as the "Old Village" and may have been the first nucleus of the town began.
Sustainable Features
This site preserves the history of Paraty as ruins of the old, rock defensive walls and the cannons can still be seen today. It is also home to a Powder House for storing explosivesl. Forte Defensor is one of seven fortifications that were built around the harbor of Paraty. .
