Historically teaming with herring, the mouth of the Squamish river has witnessed a collapse in herring populations over the last decades. Creosote-coated dock piles at the mouth of the river were previously inhabitable for herring eggs, but Squamish Streamkeepers now annually wrap the piles of the Squamish Terminal dock, creating favourable conditions for upwards of 20 million herring eggs – an important link in the life-cycles of area herring, salmon, eagle, bear and other species. www.squamishstreams.com
