Caldicot & Wentlooge Levels Internal Drainage Board
Visão geral
The Board’s Gwent Levels operational area extends for 19 miles along the low-lying land running eastwards from the mouth of the River Rhymney outside Cardiff to the mouth of the River Wye at Chepstow. The sea defences of the Severn Estuary form its southern boundary and the rising uplands of East Glamorgan & Monmouthshire, some two miles inland, its northern boundary. The drainage district covers around 10,500 hectares and is split into 2 areas. The Caldicot Level occupies 7,100 hectares to the east of the city of Newport and the Wentlooge Level 3,400 to the west.
The whole area lies below sea level, some parts up to 4 metres below mean hightide level, it has a catchment of 25,940 hectares and an annual rainfall of around 1000mm a year.
