The Project: Earthworks to capture roof runoff
Installation Date: September 14, 2013
Location: Private residence, E Camelback Rd and N 12th St, Phoenix
Workshop Leader(s): Ryan Wood
Number of Co-op Volunteers: 9
The homeowners wanted to capture rainwater from their roof and landscape and stop it from flowing off the property. To help capture this water a large infiltration basin with a surface volume of 2200 gallons was constructed.
Benefits:
A free water resource that once was wasted is now redirected into multiple beneficial uses for the homeowners. Fifty-five native-adapted plants were planted to take advantage of this harvested rainwater. The infiltration basin and the plants will: filter air, soil and water pollutants; provide a moister microclimate; help infiltrate water and organic matter deep into the soil, making the soil more water absorbent; and attract native pollinators and other wildlife back into the urban setting.
