El Jardín del Paraíso
![Community Garden: Often planted on public or formerly abandoned land, community gardens are run by volunteers who cultivate vegetables or flowers and closer relationships to nature and one another. Generally open to all participants, they are sometimes fenced, locked or threatened by development. May offer hands-on learning and a habitat for birds and insects. ![Eco-Agriculture/Permaculture: Encompasses small-scale city farm to full-size rural farms that are organic, biodynamic or using other sustainable methods. May indicate organizations linking urban communities and nearby farmers though community-supported agriculture (known as CSAs or box schemes), 4H demonstration farms, agriculture schools or food security resources and networks. ![Native Forests/Plants: Flora that is indigenous in the region, sometimes called old growth, heirloom or indigenous species. Native species requires less water and care than exotic imports, and usually attract more birds, bees and butterflies, and help the cycle of life stay in balance. May include a master gardener, permaculturalist or horticulturalist or information center. ![Garden: Gardens that are maintained by public agencies or organization. Garden](https://www.opengreenmap.org/sites/default/files/taxonomy_image/category_pictures_76.gif)
![Water Recycling: Uses plants, aquatic animals, layered soils, movement, (constructed) wetlands and or/ swales to aerate, filter and purify water, without adding chemicals. Systems that slow the drainage in the built environment, grey water, rainwater gardens, rain barrels and other types of high and low technology water recycling systems that reduce consumption can be included. ![Pedestrian Friendly: Areas that favor walking over automobiles, such as pedestrian malls, plazas and traffic calmed zones that limit or restrict car traffic. Can indicate a route around an especially interesting area. Pedestrian Friendly](https://www.opengreenmap.org/sites/default/files/taxonomy_image/category_pictures_35.gif)
![Composting Site: Place where food waste, leaves, garden and lawn cuttings are biodegraded into rich new soil. Can include large-scale or demonstration projects, drop-off sites, or places to buy locally produced compost, or to get information, worms and resources for indoor and garden composting. Overview
In English and German (German see below / Deutsch siehe unten)
A goal of El Jardin del Paraiso is to be a model eco park teaching Sustainability and Earth Stewardship. They will include permaculture principles, diverse habitats, stormwater resource usage and water purification, soil restoration, renewable energy, preservation of endangered plants, seed saving, cold climate growing techniques, and composting. This garden has recently undergone major renovation. It received a planning grant from GreenAcre for a complete rehabilitation. A landscape architect was hired to redesign the plot and the park has since received an additional GreenAcre grant to implement the plan. By using composted organics together with stormwater and grey water, all of which are considered to be waste products, soil buffers and wetlands can be created that will purify the water while sustaining native plant communities through irrigation of the garden. The aim of this design approach is to provide a model for the sustainable future of this city. As this ecological restoration also mitigates lead in the soil, it provides an encouraging example of how to protect human health by creating and restoring a biologically diverse natural fabric in the center of the urban landscape.
