Rezumat
The park provides opportunities for canoeing, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking, bicycling, camping and wildlife viewing. Visitors looking for wildlife will find that early and late in the day are the best times. Canoeists and kayakers can paddle along South Creek, a tidal blackwater stream, which flows to a nearby bay. Canoes and kayaks can be rented. Try both freshwater and saltwater fishing from the creek banks, or anglers can fish the shores of Lake Osprey, which is also the park’s swimming destination. Picnic areas are equipped with grills, and pavilions can be reserved for a fee. The park has full-facility campsites and a youth/group camp area. A visitor center has exhibits and videos about the park’s plants and wildlife. Fifteen miles of trails provide solitude, beauty, challenge and a healthy adventure for everyone. The Lester Finley Barrier Free Nature Trail, located in South Creek Picnic Area, is accessible to those with sight, hearing or mobility impairments. It has a wheelchair accessible fishing dock, butterfly observation area and drinking fountain. The park also has access to the Legacy Trail; a paved rails to trails; suitable for walking, biking, jogging, or rollerblading which runs from Venice, Florida to Sarasota, Florida passing through Oscar Scherer State Park.
GREEN BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
Since becoming a green business partner, Oscar Scherer State Park has built upon their already impressive conservation programs. From a recycling standpoint, the park has switched to a single stream recycling program, making it easier for both staff and visitors to participate. They have also ensured that recycling containers are readily available and labeled properly. Oscar Scherer is also using the recommendation from their FPL audit to assist with energy decisions. Moving forward, the park will be changing broken and burned out lights to fluorescents and LEDs, as well as installing programmable thermostats that will be set to 78° cooling and 68° heating. Water conservation measures at the park have include installing tankless water heaters, faucet aerators in camping areas and waterless no-flush urinals, reducing water usage at the park dramatically.
LEGACY TRAIL
The Legacy Trail is the largest public recreation project ever constructed in Sarasota County. At more than 10 miles in length, the trail offers one of the best ways to experience what makes Sarasota County the jewel of Florida’s gulf coast.
