The month of October presented itself with a variety of academic and extra curricular opportunities for students at Washington Elementary School. The first week of October was designated as Respect Week and the third week as Violence/Vandalism Prevention Week where students and staff participated in interdisciplinary lessons focused on how we can all show respect to one another throughout the entire year and promote a positive school culture by practicing behaviors to prevent violence in schools. During your next visit to our school, please be sure to view the many displays of student work throughout the hallways that supported these themes in conjunction with our Character Count’s Program.

The second week of October was designated as Fire Prevention Week when students in grades K through two were treated to a presentation by the Hawthorne Fire Department and also attended the Firefighter Phil assembly program that discussed the importance of fire safety.

October 20th marked the date for our annual International Feast that was attended by all grades and staff members, administrators across district and Board of Education members. A very special thank you to our PTO volunteers who gave graciously of their time throughout the day to set up the artifacts in the All Purpose Room and serve food to all attendees. The event included over one hundred ethnic dishes representing the diversity of Washington School. Thank you to all parents who provided dishes representative of their culture. Each year, the success of this event is possible through a collaborative effort of our entire parent community.

The week of October 23rd was designated as Red Ribbon Week where students followed a new theme for each day of the week that promoted the message of “Saying No To Drugs”. At any time throughout the week you could find students dressed in Red, White and Blue, wearing crazy socks or dressed in their favorite team apparel. Each day was connected to a different drug free message, beginning on Monday with wearing red to bring attention to America’s Fight to be Drug Free.

The month of October concluded with our Halloween Parade and classroom celebrations on October 31st beginning at 1:45 p.m. Congratulations to this year’s student winners of the Principal’s Halloween contest! Mad Science classes continue until December and our ROAR programs have begun for grades K-4.
