Overview
Before the establishment of a library building, families in Montclair paid a small monthly fee to "rent" books at the general store. As years passed, more books were added to the collection and the library was moved between stores and private homes until the first branch library was established in 1899 in John Manhine's real estate office on the north side of Bellevue Avenue. In 1902 The Carnegie Corporation gave $40,000 to Montclair to fund the construction of a library. Construction began on the corner of Church Street and Valley Road on the former site of the Munn Tavern. Today, this building is now part of the Unitarian Church.
This building is listed by the National Register of Historic Places since July 1, 1988 as well as the New Jersey Register of Historic Places since September 29,1986.
